Historical Studies Honours

The Department offers a rigorous  history honours programme. All students who register for a BA Honours in Historical Studies are required to complete core courses and write an honours research essay based on original research. Full time students complete the programme in one year, while those registered part-time have two years to complete the degree.

Admission Requirements: must complete Historical Studies 3A & 3B, with an average mark of a minimum of 65%.

Our two compulsory core Honours classes include Theory and Historiography’ and ‘Historical Methodology’, both usually run in the first semester. Honours students are required to take two additional geographic/thematic distribution courses within the department, usually offered in the second semester.  

In 2017 we will be offering:

Themes in African History

Investigates themes in the pre-colonial, colonial and post-colonial history and historiography of Africa.

Themes in Urban History

Investigates themes in the urban history of Africa and South Africa.

Not offered in 2017:

Themes in South Asian history

This course explores the history and historiography of South Asia across precolonial, colonial and post-colonial eras.

Historical Perspectives on Gender in Africa

This course focuses on changing gender relationships in Africa from the pre-colonial period through to the present.

Family & Social History

This course investigates changing notions of what constitutes a family and how it has operated in societies throughout the world from the early modern period until the present.

Specialisation Course

If granted permission, the student may complete reading and research in a topic of their own choice under the supervision of one or more of the lecturers.

Masters Degree (HIS9X01 and HIS9X02)

If accepted by the Department, students may register for a Full Research Masters Degree which requires the completion of a dissertation demonstrating the candidate’s ability to conduct independent academic research in the broad field of historical studies.


Doctoral Degree (HIS10X1 and HIS10X2)

If accepted by the Department for doctoral study, students may register for a Doctoral Degree which requires the completion of a substantial dissertation which makes an original contribution to the state of knowledge in the field of Historical Studies.
