For first-time applicants at the University of Johannesburg (UJ), applying for residence is a separate process from the academic application. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you navigate the residence application process:
Key Points Before Applying
Residence Deposit: Upon receiving confirmation of residence placement in January 2025-2026, you must pay a residence deposit of R1220.00.
Admission to University vs Residence: Being admitted academically to UJ does not automatically guarantee a place in the residences.
Campus Residency: You can only reside on the campus where your studies are based.
No Residence Transfers: Transfers between residences are not allowed.
Eligibility: Residence applications are open to FULL-TIME curricular undergraduate and postgraduate students.
Age Restriction: Online residence applications are not available for 1st Time Entering Students aged 24 and older. A hardcopy application is required for these applicants.
Online Residence Application – How to Guide
- Login:
- Enter your student/reference number and pin on the UJ Residence Application Portal.
- Navigate to Application Process:
- Once logged in, expand the ‘Student Web Systems’ and ‘Application Process’ folders.
- Start Application:
- Click on ‘Add New Residence Application’.
- Fill in the required fields and click ‘Proceed With Application’.
- Submit Application:
- Click on the ‘New Record’ button to submit your residence application.
Paper-Based Application
If you are 24 years or older or prefer a paper-based application, you can download the form and submit it as per the instructions provided.
Important Note
This guide and application process are specifically for students who have never studied before and are not applicable to students already registered at UJ.
