The Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MB,ChB) program at Stellenbosch University is a comprehensive and intensive program designed to train medical doctors. The program spans six years and is followed by two years of internship and a year of community service, after which graduates can register as independent medical practitioners.

Admission Requirements:

  • National Benchmark Tests (NBTs): All applicants are required to write the NBTs.
  • National Senior Certificate: A minimum aggregate of 70%.
  • Subject Requirements:
    • Mathematics (Level 4)
    • Physical Sciences (Level 4)
    • Life Sciences (Level 4)
  • Language Recommendations: Afrikaans and English are strongly recommended.
  • Selection: Approximately 235 candidates are selected each year for the program.

Program Structure:

The MB,ChB program is divided into three phases:

  1. Phase 1 (First Year):
    • Focuses on the natural sciences within the context of health sciences.
    • Covers basic health principles and personal and professional development.
    • Introduction to the disturbance of body functions during illness and its treatment.
  2. Phase 2 (Clinical Medicine):
    • Spans from the second year to the first semester of the fifth year.
    • Integrates theoretical and practical aspects of the normal structures and functions of the body’s organ systems and their disorders.
    • Includes hands-on patient management experience from the second semester of the second year.
  3. Phase 3 (Clinical Consolidation or Student Internship):
    • The final three semesters focus entirely on practical training in a clinical environment.

Postgraduate Path:

  • Internship: Two-year mandatory internship.
  • Community Service: One-year mandatory community service.
  • Registration: Eligibility for registration as an independent medical practitioner in South Africa.

Extended Degree Programme (EDP) for MB,ChB:

  • Aimed at students who have been disadvantaged by suboptimal schooling.
  • Offers support to develop potential and make the degree more accessible.
