What Is a Public School in South Africa

The South African Schools Act (SASA) of 1996 established a national education system and recognized two types of schools: public and private. Public schools are run by the government, whereas independent schools are run privately. The independent school category comprised all private schools.

SASA established a sub-category of “public schools on private property” inside the public school category, which includes state schools on private land owned by religious organizations, farmers, mining, and forestry firms.

In comparison to other developing countries, South Africa’s definition of independent schools is restricted, particularly because it excludes “public schools on private land.”
