Femicide is a term used to describe the killing of women, typically by an intimate partner. It’s also known as gender-based homicide or gendered homicide. The word femicide comes from the Latin word “Femina” which means woman.

By one analysis in 2015, the South African Medical Research Council found an intimate partner had killed one in three female murder victims.

The South African Medical Research Council found that an intimate partner had killed one in three female murder victims. The report, which examined data from 2005 to 2007, also found that women were at a higher risk of murder than men.

In 2017, the South African Police Service published a femicide report. It said that a woman’s chance of being killed was one in three — meaning her risk of being killed was much higher than if she lived in many other countries including the United States and Mexico.
