What is Import Duty in South Africa?

Import duty is a tariff or tax on goods, and services imported from a foreign country. The import duty is calculated as a percentage of the value of the goods, which is usually based on the CIF (cost, insurance and freight) price. The main function of import duty is to protect domestic industries against foreign competition. It also raises revenue for the government by creating an opportunity to tax imports at a higher rate than exports.

How do I calculate my South Africa customs duties?

The first step is to work out the value of your goods. Your goods are worth what you paid for them including any import duty, freight and insurance costs, and any other additional costs that were incurred in transporting them to South Africa.

The next step is to find out whether your goods are subject to customs duty by checking the Customs Tariff Act (No. 91) of 1964 or by using the online calculator on the SARS website (www.sars.gov.za). You can also check with your freight forwarder or transport company if there is a tariff on the goods you’re importing into South Africa before they leave their country of origin or while they are in transit between countries as this may affect how much import duty you have to pay when they arrive in South Africa.
