What is IPID in South Africa?

The IPID is the Independent Police Investigative Directorate. It was established by the South African government in 2002 to investigate and prosecute cases of serious police misconduct. The IPID does not have jurisdiction over cases involving death, rape, torture or any other crime committed by a member of the SAPS.

In terms of legislation, the IPID has no authority over any member of the SAPS. The only exception is when a member has been arrested in connection with an investigation being conducted by the IPID. Here, they can be detained for up to four hours without charge.

Where is the IPID office in South Africa?

The IPID is located in Pretoria, Gauteng. The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) is a South African law enforcement agency created by the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa to investigate serious police misconduct. The IPID was established under Chapter 9 of the Constitution and operates independently from the National Commissioner, who has no authority to give it instructions.

What is the mandate of IPID in South Africa?

The mandate of IPID is to protect the citizens and residents of South Africa by investigating, preventing and combating crime.

This includes investigating and reporting on any crime in order to bring the perpetrator(s) to justice. The mandate also includes intelligence gathering, tracing, monitoring and tracing criminal activities. IPID has the authority to arrest suspects or execute warrants issued by a court of law. They also have the authority to seize property and firearms that are used in the commission of an offence.
