What exactly is the SANDF?
The Agency of Defence is a national government department in South Africa. It commands the South African National Defence Force, which is in responsibility of defending South Africa.

To join the army reserve through direct recruiting, you must meet the following criteria:
A South African national.
Medically, mentally, and physically fit.
When joining for the first time, you must be between the ages of 18 and 26 (the required age varies depending on the kind of training/service). This age restriction does not apply to applicants who are needed to have professional or critical skill certifications.
You must possess the necessary characteristics and qualifications for your training.
You must be physically capable of performing the service or tasks associated with the position for which you apply.
If you work, your employer must be willing to provide you extraordinary leave for military operations if you meet certain criteria.

New recruits are trained, however due to the structure of the system, larger courses are offered in shorter adaptable modules.
Other corps may demand you to have prior experience in that field. To join the Air Force Reserves, for example, an applicant must have aircraft experience.
How long does it take to train for the South African Army?
Basic military training (BMT) lasts 22 weeks for South African Army recruits, up from 14 weeks in 2005. BMT is the first of a series of training sessions at the South African Army Training Depot in Kimberley.
