The Zion Christian Church
The Zion Christian Church (or ZCC) is Southern Africa’s largest African initiated church. The church’s headquarters are in Limpopo Province, South Africa, at Zion City Moria (Northern Transvaal).
African traditions and values are blended with Christian religion in the church. In contrast to the mainstream European churches, the church has sought autonomy and independence in terms of theological and doctrinal approach. Scholars such as EK Lukhaimane, Hanekom, Kruger, Sundkler, and Daneel, according to the ZCC, did not comprehend the ZCC’s approach to Christianity. They perceived ZCC as a sect because of the apartheid school system, which rejected and humiliated Africans and their values. The church’s secrecy policy, which limited its ability to publicize its operations, aggravated the issue. As a result, the ZCC maintains that much of what has been written about it is false. The church still believes in prophecy, the power of healing, and spiritual counseling, which do not align with these scholars’ scientific ideas. Instead of striving to comprehend the therapeutic significance of these activities, they disregarded them as mere superstitions. The laying on of hands, the use of holy water, the drinking of blessed tea and coffee to the point of vomiting in the belief that it cleanses the drinkers from the bad spirits that lurk in their stomachs, and the wearing of blessed cords or fabric are all procedures for faith-healing.
The church’s colors are green and yellow. Church uniforms varies depending on the state and gender of members, as well as the event. Men dress in khakis for dancing and green suits for church. Young women dress in blue for church and khaki for choir sessions. For church services, elder women wear green and yellow regalia.
Many ZCC members wear a badge or lapel pin that consists of a swatch of green cloth and a metallic insignia designating the branch of the church to which they belong as part of their everyday dress.
Because the church promotes peace, they begin their greetings with “kgotsong” or “kgotso an e be le lena/kgotso e be le lena,” which means “peace be unto you.” ZCC is about God’s love, peace, and respect.
Women are not allowed to preach at Sunday services. They are permitted to preach during the women’s services held every Wednesday, particularly at ZCC Star.
