In South Africa, voting stations open from 8am and close at 5pm on Saturday and Sunday for those who will be casting their votes.

The Electoral Commission of South Africa is an independent organization established under Chapter 9 of South African Constitution .It mains functions, conducting election to the National assembly, provincial Legislatives and municipal councils.

An interim Electoral commission was created in 1993 the first non-racial election of the national and provincial legislatures.

  • It declares the results of elections in as short a time as possible (within seven days, according to the Electoral Commission Act.

The electoral system is based on party-list proportional representation, which means that parties are represented in proportion to their electoral support. However, municipal councils uses a mixed-member system which wards elect individual councilors alongside those named from party lists.

Where can I register to vote in South Africa?

If you need to, you can register:

  • At the municipal electoral office in your municipality weekdays during office hours; or
  • During a special registration weekend at your voting station before the by-election.

What do I need in South Africa?

  • In order for you to be able to vote, you will need the following in South Africa.
  • You must take a valid ID document along (this is either a green barcoded ID book, a smartcard ID or a valid temporary ID certificate). Also, branches of the Department of Home Affairs will be open should voters urgently need a temporary ID certificate.
  • Voters whose addresses are not reflected on the voters’ roll will be required to provide their address prior to voting (Proof of address is not required).

The Electoral Commission’s contact centre will be open between 07:00 and 21:00 to assist voters with any queries.
