The first step toward becoming a detective in South Africa is to obtain a degree from an accredited university in police science, criminology, or a related field. After finishing your degree, you must serve a two-year probationary period with the South African Police Service. You will be eligible to take the detective’s exam after successfully completing your probationary period.

To work as a detective in South Africa, you must have strong investigative skills, the ability to think critically, and a strong desire to assist others. If you have what it takes to become a detective, there is no reason why you can’t succeed.

In South Africa, becoming a Private Investigator entails becoming a PI registered with the South African government agency that oversees the investigation and security industry, the “Private Security Industry Regulation Authority.” Before this can happen, you must meet basic SA Private Investigator requirements such as age, language proficiency, and other standard PI requirements. To become a PI in South Africa, you must also complete a Private Investigator licensing course/program approved by the PSiRA. PSiRA will register you as a Private Investigator after you submit proof of your ability to meet the PI requirements and complete the mandatory course/Private Investigator training program. This is where your difficulties will begin.

Your South African Private Investigator beginner’s license is simply being a registered PI with PSiRA. This will allow you to work for a private investigator agency, but not for yourself (your own PI company). This PI registration requires you to work for a fully licensed South African PI agency. However, the phrase “under supervision” will be used only in name. An experienced SA Private Investigator will not supervise or guide you. Indeed, PI agencies are not financially structured to support mentor/student surveillance teams. Furthermore, while a background in policing, the military, or criminal justice will provide you with some transferable knowledge, it will not prepare you to be a successful Private Investigator. New Private Investigators must still learn how to run successful operations. This is why practical Private Investigator education and training tailored to the needs of Private Investigators is required.
