Ramadan, the holy month of fasting in Islam, occurs when the moon is sighted in the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. Although there are slightly different views on when this happens, Ramadan typically begins about two weeks after the first sighting of the moon. This year, Ramadan will start on June 17th and will continue until July 16th. To find out when it will begin next year, keep an eye on MuslimFriendly’s Ramadan Calendar.
Ramadan Dates are Based on Calculations of the Lunar Cycle
One of the five pillars of Islam is fasting. Fasting is observed from dawn to dusk, and it includes abstaining from food and drink (including water) during this time. One of the five obligatory prayers must be prayed before sunrise, after sunset, at noon, mid-afternoon, and late evening. Ramadan starts when the new moon following Eid ul-Fitr has been sighted.
