When is Eid in South Africa 2019?

Eid-al-Fitr, also known as Eid ul-Fitr, Eid, Bayram or Id-ul-Fitr, is an important religious holiday celebrated by Muslims worldwide that marks the end of Ramadan and the start of the Islamic month of Shawwal. In South Africa, Eid falls on the 29th day of Ramadan, which this year will be on June 9. The holiday lasts three to four days, depending on moon’s sighting. No public fasting is observed during Eid al-Fitr and many Muslims visit with friends and family to feast and exchange gifts.

When Does Eid in South Africa Start?

Eid al-Fitr is one of the most important holidays for Muslims around the world. Eid occurs on the first day of Shawwal, the 10th month of the Islamic calendar. The date changes every year based on lunar cycles but often falls between the time period of June 18 to July 17.

What Is The Significance Of This Holiday?

The word Eid comes from the Arabic word Id which means to return. The celebration marks the end of Ramadan, which is a month-long fast. After fasting for 30 days, Eid offers a sense of relief and happiness as Muslims celebrate with their families, friends, or community.

How Is The Date For Eid In South Africa Fixed?

The date for Eid al-Fitr is fixed according to the Islamic lunar calendar. This is because it does not rely on a solar cycle, as other calendars do. The start of the month of Shawwal is determined by sighting the new moon. If this happens before sunrise on June 18th, then Eid will be July 6th. If it happens after sunrise, then Eid will be July 7th.
