Fruit trees are one of the best ways to add value to your property. They can be used for pruning and fruit production, as well as for creating shade or shelter in the garden.

The best time to plant your fruit trees is in spring – March and April – but they can also be planted at other times of the year depending on their specific needs.

Types of fruits and the best seasons to plant

Citrus trees on the other hand is planted from February onwards because they have a dormant period during the winter months.

In order to ensure that your citrus tree survives and grows well, it is important to follow certain guidelines when planting them. The most common types of citrus trees found in South Africa are orange, lemon and grapefruit. If you will grow any type of citrus plant, then you should know some key facts about each one:

Deciduous fruit trees, such as apple or pear trees, have a dormant period in winter when their roots grow slowly. The citrus fruit tree has no such dormant period and therefore will establish faster in spring than deciduous trees.

If you are planting citrus trees for the first time, it is best to wait until February before planting them as this will give them time to mature before the summer heat arrives.
