When Was Human Rights Day First Introduced In South Africa
How do human rights work?
Human rights are privileges that everyone is entitled to by virtue of being a person. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted by the UN in 1948, set forth 30 different human rights. Humanity, freedom, justice, and peace served as the foundation for the establishment of global human rights.
Indivisible human rights are protected by South Africa’s Bill of Rights, Chapter 2 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996. It is challenging for anyone, including the government, to take away a citizen’s fundamental rights because the articles of our Constitution can only be altered by a two-thirds majority in Parliament.

The events of Sharpeville on March 21, 1960, are historically associated with Human Rights Day in South Africa. When police opened fire on a nonviolent throng that had gathered to protest the Pass restrictions that day, 69 people lost their lives and 180 more were injured. On this day, the general public stood up in unison to declare their rights. As a reminder of our rights and the price paid for our prized human rights, it became an iconic date in our nation’s history that we honor today as Human Rights Day.

- Citizenship and security are rights that belong to everyone. Individuals and groups has the right to freedom of assembly, association, expression, and religion. Everyone has the right to be free from forced labor, servitude, and slavery; they have the right to demonstrate, picket, and petition.
- Everyone has the right to privacy, the right to express their political rights, the right to information access, and the right to fair government action. They must have access to courts and have rights when they are accused, imprisoned, and arrested.
- Everyone has the right to freedom of expression, of commerce, of occupation, and of profession. Everyone has a right to participate in labor movements and trade unions at work. Everyone has the right to a fundamental education as well as the right to buy property anyplace. They are entitled to their own languages, cultures, and communities; freedom of religion and belief; and last but not least. The rights of minors and members of particular cultural, religious, or linguistic groups are also outlined in the Bill of Rights. Additionally, there are laws specifically designed to defend women and children.

In order to create a society that values human rights and build a nation where diversity is celebrated, it acts as a historical memorial and a reminder of the sacrifices made to free us from the chains of Colonialism and Apartheid. It is a day of reflection for everyone in South Africa on Human Rights Day.

All South Africans were urged to stand up against apartheid by Mandela. Mandela fought for freedom despite being detained and held captive for 27 years, yet he never gave up or buckled under hatred.
