Cricket is one of the most popular sports in South Africa as English-speaking whites have traditionally played it. The sport is now listed among the top two most popular sports by all race groups, including the Indian community.

As the end of apartheid came to pass, a higher proportion of white players had been coming from Afrikaans-speaking backgrounds and so the sport was growing substantially among the Coloured and black African populations.

Cricket is a sport that was first introduced in South Africa by the British in the early 19th Century. With time, it became firmly established by the 1880s.

South Africa is home to two professional, domestic leagues: the country’s Professional Cricket League and the Ram Slam T20 Challenge, along with a range of other domestic cricket competitions.

The country of South Africa has been playing Test Cricket since the turn of the century. They have also been one of the 12 countries sanctioned by ICC to play test cricket.

South Africa came in first place in all three formats of the game in 2012, beating other international cricket teams such as Sri Lanka, India and Australia. In 2003, South Africa hosted the Cricket World Cup and became a part of history by being the last team to win it. And in 2007, they hosted their very own World Twenty20.
