There will be a solar eclipse on Monday, 14 December 2020.

In South Africa, the eclipse can only be viewed from Bloemfontein and Cape Town. If you live in Pretoria or Johannesburg, you cannot view it.

Never look directly at the sun. It’ll damage your eyes!

  • Do not use homemade filters, dark sunglasses, or ordinary sunglasses because they can give you permanent eye damage if not used properly.

  • This is very important so you don’t damage your vision or stay dazzled by the sun during the eclipse. Avoid looking at the sun with anything other than a certified solar filter to ensure that this isn’t a problem.

Read and follow filter instructions and supervise children

At any stage of the eclipse, avert your eyes from the sun and avoid the use of cameras, telescopes, binoculars, or other optical devices. And don’t look at it through solar filters with these devices (thinking they’re safer) because concentrated solar rays will damage them & cause serious eye injury.

Ensure your solar filter is in good condition before using it. If there are any scratches or water damage, you may not see the sun properly.
