Where Can I Buy ARVS in South Africa?

There are many options for where you can receive ARVs.

Department of Health

The Department of Health is a government department and handles the South African public healthcare system. It also manages private medical schemes and health insurance companies.

The Department of Health (DoH) was established in 2005 to replace the National Department of Health (NDOH). The DoH is tasked with providing information, monitoring and evaluation services as well as administering monetary grants from the government to public health facilities such as hospitals or clinics.

Doctors without Borders (MSF)

Doctors Without Borders (MSF) is a medical humanitarian organization that has been providing healthcare in South Africa since the 1980s. MSF runs a number of clinics and hospitals throughout the country, offering ARV treatment to those who need it.

HIV Clinics

Health facilities, such as HIV clinics and hospitals, are great places to get ARVs. They have trained doctors who can treat you. They also have a lot of equipment and resources that you might need. These health facilities may help you with other health needs as well. If you feel like your life is at risk or if your partner has HIV, going to a clinic can help make sure that everything is alright with both of you.

If this is not an option, it’s okay; there are other places where people go when they want to get tested for HIV:

Community Health Centres (CHC)

Did you know that Community Health Centres (CHCs) are the first point of contact with HIV testing? The CHCs are usually located in rural areas and townships. They are run by the government and have been set up to provide primary healthcare services to disadvantaged communities, focusing especially on treating HIV/AIDS.

The CHC is your cheapest option in getting ARV treatment and other medication you may need while living with HIV/AIDS.
