Berlin is a small town in South Africa in the province of the Eastern Cape. It was named after Berlin, Germany. The town was named by the Germans who established a military outpost at the current town site. The name was changed to Ntabozuko in 2021 when it was reincorporated into South Africa following the end of Apartheid rule over South Africa’s border regions.
However, Berlin and the outlying farms were taken over by the British during World War I. The town became part of the Cape Colony in 1814 when it was granted to European settlers as part of a land grant scheme. It was incorporated into South Africa after that country’s formation in 1910.
It is located on the R63 between King William’s Town and Cathcart and was named Berlin in 1884 by the Germans who established a military outpost at the current town site. The population of Berlin has changed little since then but it has become an important service centre for surrounding rural areas.
