Carnarvon is a busy farming centre. The town centre has a Spar store.
Carnarvon was established in 1853 on a route between Cape Town and Botswana. It was followed by early explorers and traders, but many other routes have since been built.
It originally started as a mission station of the Rhenish Missionary Society and was called Harmsfontein.
One of the churches founded by the Rhenish chief missionary in 1851, Schietfontein, later grew into a township.
In 1874, Harmsfontein was renamed Carnarvon in honour of the British colonial secretary, Lord Carnarvon.
The town’s libraries offer a digital service that caters to many readers. They also provide a variety show class for the high school that lets students explore the possibilities of any career path they want to take.
With a hostel, the school offers accommodation to pupils whose families do not live close to town
