The town of Bethal was founded in 1955 when the Union Corporation started its mining activities here. The town is 36 kilometres away from a town named after it.
One of the Directors of the company, Peter Maltitz Anderson, convinced his wife to change the name of their town to Evelyn.
The Union Corporation acquired options in the Kinross area, 64 km east of Springs. Mining started in 1955 through their subsidiary Winkelhaak Mines Ltd.
The Evander mine is currently operating in its 9th shaft and employs around 3 300 people.
The operations that Harmony Gold owns have been mining the Kimberley Reef in the Evander Basin for many years and produced 16,000 kilograms of gold between 2008-2010. The ore is slowly but surely being processed into gold bars at a local milling plant 7 kilometres to the southwest.
