Dutywa (originally Idutywa) is a town in the Mbashe Local Municipality of the Eastern Cape region of South Africa, built in 1858 as a military fort following a disagreement between a Natal Colony raiding expedition and the local population. It gets its name from the Dutywa River, which is a tributary of the Mbhashe River. The name means “site of chaos” in Xhosa, and it was legally changed from “Idutywa” to “Dutywa” on July 16, 2004. The town was founded in 1884 and became a municipality in 1913. Former South African President Thabo Mbeki was born in the town.
