Where Is Melmoth In South Africa
Melmoth, known as the gateway to the Zulu Highlands, is a picturesque, little town just 200 km north east of Durban and 90 km from the coastal town of Mtunzini.
History
Melmoth was a “gold rush” town founded in 1888 and named after Sir Melmoth Osborn, the resident commissioner of Zululand at the time. According to the South African version of Trivial Pursuit, Melmoth has the cleanest air in the nation. In general, Melmoth is regarded as a decent location for tourists who want to drive an hour or less to nearby points of interest. Piet Retief and his group of Boer commandos were executed in uMgungundlovu, the former royal residence of Dingaan, and the final battle of the Anglo Zulu War was fought at Ulundi, the capital of Zululand.
Why Visit Melmoth
Given that lion cubs have recently been introduced, the Matatane Crocodile Ranch, which is located on the banks of the White Umfolozi River, is a popular destination for hikers and people who want to get up close and personal with crocodiles.
Production
It’s ironic that Ntingwe Tea Plantations, which only produces tea for export, is located in this secluded area of KwaZulu Natal while producing some of South Africa’s finest teas. Ntingwe is sold as a breakfast or afternoon refreshment and is regarded as being lighter than other African teas, such as those made in Kenya. It has earned an excellent reputation on the global market. The region’s largest employer and main provider of financial stability, it was founded in 1987.
Nearly 68 miles separate Melmoth from Nkandla Forest. It has been considered as a location of mystery and the supernatural throughout Zulu history, and the Chube, ironworkers connected to the Nkandla region, were never subdued by Shaka. The forest is one of the few remaining instances of a high wet rain forest and a relic of a time when the climate was wetter and colder. It is also one among South Africa’s top survivors of mist belt forest. The Nsuze River, which flows at the base of the hill, is fed by steams that rise in the forest and create deep gorges. Since there are currently no visitor facilities, one needs permission from the Officer in Charge before entering the forest.
