Roedtan is a small town in South Africa’s Limpopo province, located in the Springbok Flats. Roedtan has a railway station 85 kilometers (53 miles) from Polokwane. A monument commemorates the battle of Moordrift in 1854, when 33 white people were killed in a skirmish with the local tribe led by Makapane. Makapansgat Cave, a national monument, is now known to record early hominid occupation (1,500,000 years ago). The Springbok Flats are a reminder that once upon a time, large herds of Springbok roamed the plain, which was also frequented by lions and other wild animals.
History
After discovering gold on the farm Wilgespruit at the western end of the Witwatersrand in 1884, brothers Fred and Harry Struben were granted mining concessions. When news of George Harrison’s discovery at Langlaagte spread and gold fever erupted, the Strubens brothers were joined by a swarm of gold diggers. A.P. Marais prospected and mined in other areas such as Maraisburg, and the owners in Florida were van der Hoven, Bantjies, and Lys. Despite the fact that the Struben brothers’ Confidence Reef produced little gold and their mine was unprofitable, the ramshackle town that grew up around it was incorporated as the Roodepoort Municipality in 1904. Roodepoort became a city in 1977, incorporating the towns of Hamburg, Florida, and Maraisburg, and has since developed as one of Johannesburg’s most prominently Afrikaans (language of Dutch origin) speaking districts.
