Underberg is an administrative town in the Mzimkulu River valley of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, amid a dairy and cow agricultural settlement. It is located in the foothills of the southern Drakensberg, KwaZulu-Natal, at the foot of the 1,904 m Hlogoma Peak (place of echoes). Underberg was founded in 1917, when the railway from Pietermaritzburg arrived. It is a vital economic hub for the region’s agricultural industry, providing various support services. It also serves as a trading post for those traveling down the neighboring Sani Pass from Lesotho.
The town also houses provincial offices for the ministries of Social Welfare and Transportation, as well as a clinic and the municipal library. The globally recognized Sani2C Mountain Bike Race begins in Underberg each year, and the arduous Joberg2C MTB Race passes through along the same route on Day 6. Paddlers from all over the world come each year for the Drak Challenge canoe race on the Mzimkulu river.
