South Africa has a high rate of HIV. Every year, there are more than 1 million new infections and approximately 600 000 deaths from AIDS.

Since the beginning of the epidemic, South Africa has been one of the hardest-hit countries in the world. The country’s HIV prevalence rate is currently at 27% and is expected to reach 40% by 2020.

The provinces with the highest rates of HIV are Eastern Cape with a rate of 34%, Gauteng with a rate of 33%, KwaZulu-Natal with a rate of 32%, Mpumalanga with a rate of 31%.

What are the Most Affected Provinces of South Africa by HIV – 2019?

The country has a population of more than 50 million people. The top five provinces with the highest number of people living with HIV are Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Western Cape, Eastern Cape and North West.

South Africa has seen a steady increase in the number of people living with HIV since 2000 when it was estimated to be around 200 thousand people. In 2017 there were more than 2.1 million people living with HIV in South Africa.
