The current MTN8 winners, Pirates, have only ever claimed one League Cup, ending a lengthy trophy drought in 2011.
While Sundowns have won three Top 8 championships, five FA Cups, and the 2020 Nedbank Cup after defeating Bloemfontein Celtic in the championship match.
Masandawana is the second-most successful side in the history of the competition, after Chiefs, with four League Cup victories.
Sundowns is the last team to win the League Cup, which was later dropped from the football schedule after the PSL’s sponsorship agreement with Telkom expired in 2019.
National league championships
When Sundowns won the 2020/21 PSL championship, they surpassed all other clubs in terms of national league titles won.
The Tshwane giants won their record 14th national league championship, which included 11 PSL titles and three National Soccer League trophies.
They overtook Chiefs, who have won a record five National Professional Soccer League championships, four National Soccer League trophies, and four PSL championships, giving them 13 national league titles overall.
Pirates, on the other hand, have won nine national league championships, including four PSL crowns, one National Soccer League trophy, and four National Professional Soccer League trophies.
Continental achievement
With a combined total of two Caf trophies, Pirates and Sundowns are without a doubt the nation’s most accomplished teams in continental tournaments.
When the Buccaneers won the 1995 and 1996 Caf Super Cups, they were the first South African club to experience success in Africa.
By winning the 2016 Caf Champions League championship and then the 2017 Caf Super Cup, Sundowns followed in the footsteps of Pirates.
Chiefs won the 2001 Caf African Cup Winners’ Cup, which is still their lone continental championship.
