The political leader of the National Treasury is the Minister of Finance, a member of South Africa’s Cabinet. The budget, economic policymaking, and financial administration of government activities are all the minister of finance’s responsibilities (in cooperation with the Minister of Economic Development and the Minister of Trade and Industry). Background

Godongwana has a long history in the labor movement, having held a number of executive posts in the National Union of Metal Workers of South Africa, one of the country’s largest industrial unions, including serving as the organization’s general secretary from 1993 to 1997. He was also the chairman of COSATU’s Economic Development Task Force and sat on the Central and Executive Committees of the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) from 1992 to 1997. He helped develop the Labour Relations Act, among other progressive labor laws, and is one of the founding members of the National Economic Development and Labour Council (NEDLAC).
