What does IEC stand for?
The Electoral Commission of South Africa is the organization responsible for the administration of all elections in South Africa. The commission’s mandate is to ensure that all elections are both free and fair. It also has a responsibility to promote, encourage, and facilitate voter participation. The commission is established by the Constitution of South Africa and its authority is derived from legislation passed by Parliament.
Who makes up the IEC in South Africa?
IEC is an independent body in South Africa. It was created to ensure that a fair and transparent election process takes place. The Commission comprises five members, one of whom must be a judge. Members must be non-partisan South African citizens who have the following qualifications: (a) be of good character,(b) have an interest in the administration of justice and(c) have sufficient knowledge of the law. As well as those qualifications, members must also:(1) not be subject to any disqualification that would prevent them from being appointed to the Commission. The president appoints members from the judiciary, academia, and civil society organisations.
