This esteemed program, on par with an honors degree, unfolds across the educational spheres of Braamfontein and medical school campuses, integrating intensive theoretical study and extensive clinical training.

Students embark on their nursing education journey from the first year, blending community engagement and hospital-based practice right from the start. This blend grows progressively complex and demanding throughout the degree’s duration. A diversified curriculum lays the groundwork with essential sciences and branches into the intricate layers of nursing science theory and practical application. The hallmark of the Wits Nursing Bachelor’s degree is its solid scientific grounding.

Admission Requirements

The Faculty of Health Sciences takes a unique approach to assessing applicants, focusing on five subjects to compute a matriculation score based on percentages rather than symbols. The subjects considered for this evaluation include English, Mathematics, Physical Science or Life Sciences, and the two best additional subjects.

The National Senior Certificate (NSC) stands as the prevailing school-leaving qualification, aligning with the Grade 10 to 12 curriculum. For students matriculating in 2012 and beyond, passing the exams will earn them this certificate.

The basic thresholds for entry are:

  • English Home or First Additional Language – Level 4 (50%)
  • Mathematics – Level 4 (50%)
  • Life Science and/or Physical Science – Level 4 (50%)

Program Delivery

Small group learning is at the core of the program’s delivery method, allowing for the tackling of clinical problems in a structured manner that encompasses the entire curriculum.

The learning experience is enriched by a diverse array of educational mediums, including libraries, labs, lecturers, workshops, IT facilities, seminars, fieldwork, and tutorials. Core topics covered include health concepts, wellness, illness, professional practice, transcultural care, research fundamentals, first aid, and clinical skills. This full-time program culminates at an NQF exit level 7.
