Short Learning Programme in Creative Writing at Unisa

Programme Overview: The Short Learning Programme in Creative Writing at Unisa is designed for individuals interested in developing their creative writing skills in prose and poetry. It’s a semester-long course aimed at introducing the fundamentals of creative writing with a disciplined and directed approach.

Registration Period:

For 2nd Semester 2023: Open from 22 May to 28 July 2023.

1st Semester Registration: Typically in January/February.

Admission Requirements:

Senior Certificate or an equivalent NQF level 4 qualification.

Equivalent experience in creative writing may also be considered.

Target Group:

Individuals with a keen interest in creative writing.

Course Content and Modules:

CCWR01A – Introduction to Creative Writing

Syllabus/Content:

Words: Denotation and connotation.

Paradox words, images, and symbols in literary contexts.

Words and the senses: The five basic senses and the sixth (or eidetic) sense.

Words and rhyme, rhythm.

Words and sounds: Assonance, alliteration, onomatopoeia, sibilants, plosives.

Words and sentences: Structure and forms.

The leitmotif: Case study.

Rules and exceptions in poetry writing: Metaphor, poem form and content, praise poetry, free verse, epiphanic moments, sonnets, ballads, parody, allegory, and satire.

Purpose of the Programme:

To equip students with basic skills in creative writing.

To guide students in approaching creative writing tasks with discipline and direction.
