The Irish Aid Kader Asmal Scholarship was created in honor of late Professor Kader Asmal, a renowned educator and activist.
Professor Kader Asmal
Professor of Law specializing in labor, human rights, and international law at Trinity College Dublin for 27 years.
Co-founder of the Irish Anti-Apartheid Movement.
Member of the ANC team that negotiated South Africa’s transition to democracy.

Enable South Africans with leadership potential to pursue relevant postgraduate studies in Irish higher education institutions.
Foster positive relationships between Ireland and Africa.

Fully-funded scholarship for the 2023 academic year, managed by the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

Expenses Covered by the Kader Asmal Fellowship Programme
Covered Expenses
The fellowships provide cover for the following expenses:
- Student visitor visa application fee.
- University application fees.
- Tuition fees.
- Examination fees.
- Economy travel to and from South Africa to Ireland.
- Allowance for settling in.
- Accommodation.
- Book allowance.
- Study allowance.
- Monthly personal living allowance/stipend for other living expenses.
Career Requirement
- After graduating and returning home, fellows are required to pursue a career and utilize their acquired skills for the benefit of their country.
Eligibility Requirements for the Kader Asmal Fellowship
Minimum Entry Criteria
To be eligible for the Kader Asmal Fellowship, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- South African resident national.
- Completion of an Honours-level qualification.
- Honours qualification obtained from an accredited and recognized higher education institution.
- Minimum average of 75% for Honours studies (first class Honours or second class Honours, Grade 1).
- No previous completion of a Master’s or higher level qualification.
- Intention to study towards a Master’s level qualification in Ireland, starting after August/September 2023.
- Selection of 2 relevant courses from the Ireland-Africa Fellows Programme Directory of Eligible Courses.
- Commencement of the Fellowship in the 2023/2024 academic year.
- At least 2 years of relevant working experience related to the chosen course of study.
- Demonstrated leadership abilities and aspirations.
- Commitment to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals in their own country.
- Understanding of the academic and English language proficiencies required for the chosen courses.
- No previous application to the Kader Asmal Fellowship Programme.

Application Process
Applications must be submitted online at the Kader Asmal Fellowship Application [link].
Shortlisted candidates will be required to submit clear copies of supporting documentation.
Required Supporting Documentation
Passport identity page (certified copy).
1 passport-sized photograph.
Graduation certificates for all higher education qualifications completed.
Academic transcripts for all higher education qualifications completed.
2 academic reference letters from academics who have taught the applicant personally (on official letterhead with contact details).
Original IELTS score report, if available (completed in September 2021 or later).
Updated Curriculum Vitae.
Application Process for the Kader Asmal Fellowship
Stages of the Application Process
The application process for the fellowship consists of 3 stages:
Stage 1: Online Application
- Short application to assess eligibility.
- Applications assessed by the Canon Collins selection panel.
- Candidates informed of their success or rejection.
Stage 2: Detailed Application
- Successful applicants from Stage 1 invited to complete a more detailed application form.
- Submission of required documents.
- Stage 2 takes place between 7 and 30 September .
Stage 3: English Language Tests and Interviews
Applicants required to complete English language tests.
Invited to attend interviews.
Closing Date for the Kader Asmal Fellowship
Closing date: 3 August (at 11:59 pm GMT).
Applications submitted after the closing date will not be accepted.
