About UJ & CARINBE:
The Center of Applied Research and Innovation Built Environment (CARINBE) is affiliated with the School of Civil Engineering and Built Environment (SCEBE) and is governed by the University of Johannesburg. Located on the Doornfontein campus of the University of Johannesburg, CARINBE is dedicated to advancing the environmental industry through scientific research. Its mission is to provide credible information and establish itself as an innovator in the field, aiming to create a sustainable research center that sets both long-term and short-term agendas for the environmental sector. CARINBE plays a crucial role in bridging gaps and addressing challenges faced by the environmental industry in South Africa.
Barry Bredenkamp Bursary 2024:
The Barry Bredenkamp Bursary is offered in collaboration with the South African National Energy Development Institute (SANEDI) and the University of Johannesburg (UJ). This bursary is designed to support deserving and motivated M.Sc. and Ph.D. students enrolled in the Faculty of Science and Engineering and Built Environment at UJ.
The bursary covers research topics related to various areas of environmental and energy research, including:
- Charging of electrical EV Charging infrastructure, location, cost
- Cybersecurity Considerations for Distributed Energy Resources
- Coordinated Voltage Regulator and Smart Inverter Settings with High Levels of DER
- E-mobility technologies and adaptation, Monitor Green E-mobility strategy
- Restricted Security Area Surveillance based on Power System Digital Twins
The bursary committee will provide R100,000 for Master’s students and R150,000 for Ph.D. students to cover academic, research activities, and student welfare. Selected students will also have opportunities for internships, vacation work, workshops, and exposure to make a difference in the industry.
Eligibility Criteria:
To qualify for the Barry Bredenkamp Bursary, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Be a student of the University of Johannesburg enrolled in the Faculty of Science or the Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment.
- Be pursuing a Master’s or Ph.D. degree with research related to the topics specified by the bursary committee.
- Preference will be given to designated and underprivileged students.

- Certified copy of passport/ID document
- Copies of the highest qualification certificate
- If you pursued a degree outside South Africa, submit a SAQA certificate.
- Personal statement
- Research proposal
- Curriculum Vitae
- Sample article or paper written on the chosen study area (preferably an unpublished paper)
- Two references to be submitted directly to the PG administrator at carinbe@uj.ac.za

The closing date for the Barry Bredenkamp Bursary 2025-2026 is August 31, at 23:59. Applications submitted after the deadline will not be considered by the bursary committee.
