Admission Requirements and Selection Process
We welcome all applications submitted by the stated deadlines. Applicants are ranked based on the criteria set forth in our Departmental Student Enrollment Plan, with the highest-ranking candidates granted admission. When program capacity is reached, a waiting list is established to accommodate late registrants if spots become available. Applicants will receive their admission status via an official letter from the Office of the Registrar or can verify it online at www.tut.ac.za.
For Senior Certificate Holders (Before 2008):
- Requirements: A Senior Certificate or its equivalent, with a minimum of an E at Higher Grade or a D at Standard Grade in English and Mathematics.
- Suggested subjects: Computer Science, Physical Science.
- Selection: Utilization of the Swedish scoring system. Prospective students with a merit score of 9 or higher may be invited for further evaluation or an interview. Appointments are arranged through the departmental secretary.
For National Senior Certificate Holders (2008 Onward):
- Requirements: A National Senior Certificate with bachelor’s or diploma endorsement, with at least level 4 in English and level 5 in Mathematics (or level 7 in Mathematical Literacy).
- Selection: Admission Point Score (APS) of 26 (with Mathematics) or 28 (with Mathematical Literacy) is required. Extended program options are available for those with APS of 23 (with Mathematics) or 25 (with Mathematical Literacy).
For National Certificate (Vocational) Level 4 Holders:
- Requirements: A National Certificate (Vocational) with a bachelor’s or diploma endorsement, with a minimum of 50% in English and 60% in Mathematics (or 80% in Mathematical Literacy) and 50% in other vocational subjects.
- Selection: An APS of at least 26 (with Mathematics) or 28 (with Mathematical Literacy) for standard programs; extended options are available for lower scores.
For National N Certificate (NATED 191) Level 4 Holders:
- Requirements: A National Senior Certificate and National N Certificate (N3), with at least 60% in Mathematics for standard programs and 50% for extended programs.
- Additional Details: Refer to the Students’ Rules and Regulations for information on RPL, intake times, program duration, class schedules, and policies on exclusion, readmission, and work-integrated learning.
These guidelines ensure a fair and systematic approach to selecting the most qualified applicants while providing clarity and transparency in the admissions process.
