The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) is a trade union in South Africa. It was founded on October 18, 1982, and is affiliated with the African National Congress. The secretary-general is Moses Maphumulo. A group of underground miners found the National Union of Mineworkers on October 18, 1982, in the Witwatersrand Gold Fields. It was formed to accommodate the grievances of mine workers who were involved in a fierce dispute with their employer, Anglo-American Corporation, at that time.
Can a Union represent its members if they do not work?
A union can represent its members if they do not work. They often compensate Union members for their work in some form. For example, they may compensate a union member with a salary or hourly wage, benefits, and/or paid time off.
The most common form of compensation is a salary or hourly wage. Union members who are paid a salary usually receive the same amount of pay each week or month regardless of the number of hours they work. Union members who are compensated by an hourly wage receive overtime pay at one-and-a-half times the normal rate for hours worked over 40 per week (although this varies by state).
Union members who are compensated with benefits receive health insurance coverage, but sometimes have to contribute a portion of the cost themselves. The type and amount of health insurance coverage vary depending on the bargaining agreement between the employer and union and other factors such as where an employee lives and whether he or she has dependents.
