SARS will automatically register you and give a tax reference number if you register for SARS eFiling for the first time and do not yet have a personal income tax number. Please keep in mind that you must have a valid South African ID.
The following documentation is required:
1) Identity Proof: Certified or uncertified copies of a valid identity document, driving license, passport, temporary identity document, asylum seekers certificate or permit, together with the original identification (Identity document includes the green barcoded book and the smart ID card)
In the case of a minor, a certified or uncertified copy of the minor’s birth certificate, as well as a copy of one of the parent’s/identity guardian’s documents. If there is no living parent, the designated guardian must produce the death certificate of one parent.
2) Proof of Address: The table below lists the papers that SARS would accept as proof of home or business address.
The taxpayer’s name (either initials and surname or first names(s) and surname) and physical address must be clearly displayed on the paper.
3) Proof of Bank Details: An original letter from the bank, no more than one month (30 days old), verifying the account holder’s legal name, account number, account type, branch code, and date the account was created; or
Original bank statement, ATM / Internet generated statement, or an eStamped statement not more than three months old that confirms the account holder’s legal name, bank name, account number, account type, and branch code, where applicable, or, if a new bank account was opened and a bank statement cannot be produced, an original letter from the bank not older than one month on the bank letterhead with the original bank stamp reflecting the date the bank account was opened.
A certified copy of the marriage certificate is necessary if the wife/husband does not have a bank account and decides to use his/her spouse’s banking credentials. An affidavit must be submitted in the case of a Life Partner.
After you’ve been registered and assigned a tax number, you may sign up for eFiling, which is a simple and convenient method to engage with SARS.
All you need is a computer and access to the internet. As a registered eFiler, you will be able to submit your tax return online and make payments to SARS, among other things.
