What is the South African VAT registration procedure?

Submit the registration form to your nearest SARS office within 21 days after surpassing R1 million. VAT is imposed at a standard rate of 15% on products and services supplied by registered vendors. A limited number of goods and services are either subject to zero-rate VAT or are VAT-free.

Is it necessary for a small firm to file for VAT?

If your turnover is minimal, you might opt to register for VAT (‘voluntary registration’). If everything you sell is VAT-free, you do not need to register for VAT.
