Canyon Coal: An Overview

Canyon Coal, a prominent player in the coal exploration, mining, and processing industry, operates several collieries and processing plants across South Africa, predominantly in the Mpumalanga and Gauteng provinces. Key operations include the Phalanndwa Colliery, an opencast mine started in January 2013, with an extension project beginning in July 2019. The Khanye Colliery, the flagship opencast mine, began operations in January 2018, primarily producing coal for the export market. Additionally, the Gugulethu Colliery is one of Canyon Coal’s latest mining endeavors.

Canyon Coal Bursary Programme 2024-2025

Canyon Coal is inviting applications for its bursary programme for the 2024 academic year through its collieries (Khanye Colliery, Bekezela Colliery, and Gugulethu Colliery). The bursaries are intended for students pursuing mining-related fields of study, including:

  • Electrical Engineering
  • Environmental Sciences
  • Geology (BSc)
  • Mine Survey (BSc)
  • Mining Engineering
  • Metallurgy
  • Safety Management

The Canyon Coal Bursary Programme offers comprehensive financial support, covering full tuition fees, accommodation, and book allowances. Candidates shortlisted for the bursary will be contacted within 14 days after the closing date. Lack of feedback within this period indicates an unsuccessful application.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the Canyon Coal Bursary, applicants must:

  • Be South African citizens.
  • Be current Matric students (in current year) or have completed Matric.
  • Plan to study or have been provisionally accepted to study one of the above fields in 2024-2025

at a South African university.

  • Have an interest in a career in the Mining Industry.
  • Achieve a minimum overall average of 65% for all major subjects if currently studying.
  • Preference will be given to previously disadvantaged students residing in the host communities (Bronkhorstspruit area, Bekezela Colliery: Host community, Gugulethu Colliery: Msukaligwa area).
  • Demonstrate financial need.
  • Preference will be given to students studying or applying to study at a local tertiary institution.
  • Female students and students with disabilities are especially encouraged to apply.

Application Process

To apply for the Canyon Coal Bursary, candidates must:

  1. Download and complete the Canyon Coal Bursary Application Form for the year 2024 (available in PDF format).
  2. Enter “Uni24.co.za” in the relevant field in the form to indicate how you heard about the bursary.

Required Documentation

Applicants must submit the following documents along with their completed application form:

  • Certified copy of the ID document.
  • Certified copy of Matric latest results or certificate.
  • Certified copies of tertiary academic records and most recent results, if currently studying.
