About the Bursary Provider – Council for Geoscience (CGS):
The Council for Geoscience (CGS) is a scientific research council that focuses on promoting and providing research within the geoscience field. It was established as a successor to the Geological Survey of South Africa. The CGS is headquartered in Pretoria and has regional offices in various locations across South Africa.
The CGS offers specialized geoscientific services and conducts research in areas such as core drilling services, environmental management and rehabilitation, mining and minerals services, mineral resources development, water geoscience and hydrological services, and engineering geoscience and geotechnical services. Council for Geoscience Bursary Program:
The Council for Geoscience (CGS) is inviting students to apply for their bursary program for the 2023 academic year. The bursaries are available for studies in various fields within geoscience at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, including BSc, BSc Hons, MSc, and PhD.
Fields covered by the bursary program include, but are not limited to:
- Computational Geosciences
- Economic Geology
- Engineering Geology
- Geo-informatics
- Geochemistry
- Geology
- Geophysics
- Hydrogeology (with a focus on groundwater modeling)
- Mineral Economics
- Mining Seismology
- Remote Sensing
- Science Communication
The bursaries will be awarded for research topics defined by the CGS.
Expenses Covered, Service Contract, and Selection:
The bursary will cover various expenses, including registration fees, tuition fees, prescribed books, meals, accommodation, research/excursions, and a laptop allowance for first-time bursary recipients. Bursary recipients may be required to participate in vocational work at the CGS during university holidays and may have a work-back contract with the CGS after graduation.
Shortlisted candidates will be contacted within one month of the bursary closing date. If no feedback is received, applicants should consider their application unsuccessful.
Eligibility Requirements:
Applicants must meet the following minimum criteria:
- South African citizen
- Currently in Matric or have completed Matric
- Studying or intending to study full-time in one of the fields listed above at a recognized tertiary institution in South Africa in
- For current Matric students, passing Mathematics and Physical Science as key subjects in Matric
- For students who have completed Matric, achieving a minimum level 6 for Mathematics and Physical Science in Matric
- For current tertiary students, passing all registered courses for the completed study period
- Not currently employed and willing and able to work for the CGS when required
- Preference given to female students and students living with disabilities

The form should be submitted along with clear copies of required supporting documents, including ID document, Matric certificate, academic records, proof of acceptance at a university, updated Curriculum Vitae, and a motivational letter.
