Durban University of Technology DUT Online Application Steps

Before commencing your application, make sure to have all your necessary documents ready ( outlined below ), a working email address and other essential information for student loan application where necessary, such as NSFAS Application.

We hope that the information provided will enable you to make an informed decision about applying to DUT. To help you get the most out of the information provided, here are a few key points you should bear in mind:

  1. Identify the course you wish to study. Programmes offered can be found in the Career leaflets and Study Opportunities.
  2. The minimum entrance requirements for admission to the DUT for a South African applicant is as below:

For Higher Certificate programmes:

a National Senior Certificate (NSC) as certified by the Council for General and Further Education and Training (Umalusi), with a minimum achievement rating of 3 for English.

For Diploma programmes:

a National Senior Certificate (NSC) as certified by the Council for General and Further Education and Training (Umalusi), with a minimum of achievement rating of 3 for English and a minimum achievement rating of 3 in four recognised NSC 20-credit subjects.

For Bachelor’s Degree programmes:

a National Senior Certificate (NSC) as certified by the Council for General and Further Education and Training (Umalusi), with a minimum achievement rating of 3 for English and a minimum achievement rating of 4 in four NSC 20-credit subjects chosen from the NSC designated subject list.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR ADMISSION FOR NCV LEVEL 4 APPLICANTS

For Higher Certificate:

A National Certificate (Vocational) Level 4 with at least 50% in English.

For Diploma:

A National Certificate (Vocational) Level 4 with the following minimum requirements:

  1. At least 50% in three fundamental subjects including, English; and
  2. At least 60% in three compulsory vocational

For Bachelor’s Degree:

A National Certificate (Vocational) Level 4 with the following minimum requirements:

  1. At least 60% in three fundamental subjects, including English; and
  2. At least 70% in four compulsory vocational subjects, chosen from the National Certificate (Vocational) Level 4

Over and above the minimum entrance requirements, each department also sets specific entrance requirements with which applicants needs to comply.

  1. International applicants are required to check the International Brochure for detailed information on the admission process.
  2. Apply online at the Central Applications Office (CAO). (A prospective student who wishes to study at DUT must apply via the CAO by visiting their website at www.cao.ac.za)

Please complete the CAO application form online, and attach certified copies of your identity document and Grade 12 certificate (June/ Trial report if you have not written your final examination). The application form must reach the CAO office before the closing date of 30 September 2019 for Diploma & Degree programmes and 30 November 2019 for Higher Certificate programmes. Please refer to specific programmes for relevant closing dates, as some programmes close earlier than 30 November 2020. Include the appropriate application fee of R250 (SA Citizen) / R300 (International applicants) when submitting your application form. Make sure that your application AND fee reach the CAO before the closing date. Submission of a completed application form does not imply that you have been accepted as a student, or that you may register. All applicants will be notified, in writing/SMS, of the outcome of their application. The CAO provides an on-line application facility. Kindly consult the CAO webpage at www.cao.ac.za

Durban University of Technology DUT Offline Application

In contrast to using the Durban University of Technology DUT Online Application Portal, students can opt to apply via hardcopies of the Durban University of Technology DUT Application Forms. These can be obtained online on the University’s website or by directly visiting the Admissions Office. The following are the costs of the application forms

  • Undergraduate applications from South Africa and SADC region: R100
  • Undergraduate applications from outside of the SADC region: R300

Durban University of Technology DUT Admission Requirements

Undergraduate Diploma Study

The minimum requirement for admission to undergraduate diploma study is a National Senior Certificate (NSC) as certified by Umalusi with an achievement rating of 3 (Moderate Achievement, 40-49%) or better in 4 recognised NSC 20-credit subjects.

Bachelor’s Degree Study

To be eligible for admission to degree study, applicants need to meet minimum requirements for eligibility:

  • Applicants holding a South African National Senior Certificate (NSC) need to pass a minimum of 4 subjects at a rating of 4 (Adequate Achievement, 50-59%) or better in any four 20-credit NSC subjects.
  • Applicants holding a South African Senior Certificate need matriculation endorsement.
  • Applicants holding non-South African school-leaving certificates must qualify for a matriculation exemption certificate.

  • South African applicants will need an ID number.  Foreign applicants will need their passport number.
  • Once you receive your student number from Durban University of Technology DUT, you will need to pay the application fee.

Who uses them and how?

A number of universities in South Africa use the NBTs to help interpret your National Senior Certificate results. Universities use the NBT results in different ways:

  • Some use them to help make decisions about your access to university. This means that your NBT results, in combination with your NSC results, are used to determine whether you are ready for academic study.
  • Some use them for placement within university. This means that the results are used to decide whether you will need extra academic support after you have been admitted to university.
  • Some use them to help develop curricula within their university.
