Below are links to the undergraduate application portal, this page provides details on undergraduate admission requirements, application fees, courses offered and undergraduate application forms for the current academic year.

To apply, go to www.wits.ac.za/applications/

You may apply for a maximum of three programmes (order of choice does not matter).
Do you meet the admission requirements for your degree of choice?
Apply before the closing date.
Apply using your names as they appear on your ID book/card or passport (do not use initials or nicknames).
If you apply for two programmes within one Faculty, you are advised to apply for one programme in a less restricted faculty (e.g. Humanities, Commerce or Science).
Try to keep your study options open, especially when applying for programmes in faculties such as Health Sciences or Engineering.
Do not enter the duration of the programme. You are applying to go into 1st year of study.
In accordance with the POPI Act, applicants are required to complete their own applications and accept the University’s legal declaration of indemnity and undertaking. The University will not engage with third-party agents facilitating applications on behalf of applicants.

Residence applications will open 1 April . Go to the self-service portal to apply.

STEP 1 – Acknowledgement of Application

To apply online, go to www.wits.ac.za/applications/

You may apply for a maximum of three programmes (order of choice does not matter).
If you apply for two programmes within one Faculty, you are advised to apply for one programme in a less restricted faculty (e.g. Humanities, Commerce or Science).
Try to keep your options open, especially when applying for programmes in Faculties such as Health Sciences or Engineering.

A non-refundable application fee of R100 for South African citizens, and R700 for foreign citizens, is required.

Bachelor of Social Work applicants should please ensure to book to write the National Benchmark Test (NBT) by no later than 12 September as the last NBT session takes place on 2 October .

STEP 2 – Acknowledgement of Application

You will receive an email from the University acknowledging receipt of your application.
The acknowledgment letter will contain a person number (which will become your student number), and a reference person for you to contact for any queries you may have.
All records of correspondence from the University will be available on the student self-service portal https://self-service.wits.ac.za
Check the status of your application and to do items on the student self-service portal regularly.
Keep your contact details up-to-date on self-service.

University of Witwatersrand WITS Offline Application

In contrast to using the University of Witwatersrand WITS Online Application Portal, students can opt to apply via hardcopies of the University of Witwatersrand WITS Application Forms. These can be obtained online on the University’s website or by directly visiting the Admissions Office. The following are the costs of the application forms

Undergraduate applications from South Africa and SADC region: R100
Undergraduate applications from outside of the SADC region: R300

University of Witwatersrand WITS Admission Requirements

Undergraduate Diploma Study

The minimum requirement for admission to undergraduate diploma study is a National Senior Certificate (NSC) as certified by Umalusi with an achievement rating of 3 (Moderate Achievement, 40-49%) or better in 4 recognised NSC 20-credit subjects.

Bachelor’s Degree Study

To be eligible for admission to degree study, applicants need to meet minimum requirements for eligibility:

Applicants holding a South African National Senior Certificate (NSC) need to pass a minimum of 4 subjects at a rating of 4 (Adequate Achievement, 50-59%) or better in any four 20-credit NSC subjects.
Applicants holding a South African Senior Certificate need matriculation endorsement.
Applicants holding non-South African school-leaving certificates must qualify for a matriculation exemption certificate.

Admission Point Score (APS)

Are you an applicant who is currently writing or completed the NSC matric? If you are, then please read the information below regarding admission requirements.

NB: This is a guideline only. Meeting the requirements does not guarantee a place. Final selection is made subject to the availability of places, academic results and other entry requirements where applicable.

Wits tabulates the points score for all subjects on the following basis:

That English must be taken either as Home Language or as 1st Additional Language.
Mathematics is compulsory for all numerate programmes in Engineering and the Built Environment, Commerce, Law and Management, and Science.
Maths Literacy is accepted for some degrees (see Admission Requirements (NSC)).
Wits does not distinguish between designated vs non-designated subjects when calculating the admission point score (APS)
The APS calculation is based on the best seven subjects including Life Orientation

South African applicants will need an ID number. Foreign applicants will need their passport number.
Once you receive your student number from University of Witwatersrand WITS, you will need to pay the application fee.

Who uses them and how?

A number of universities in South Africa use the NBTs to help interpret your National Senior Certificate results. Universities use the NBT results in different ways:

Some use them to help make decisions about your access to university. This means that your NBT results, in combination with your NSC results, are used to determine whether you are ready for academic study.
Some use them for placement within university. This means that the results are used to decide whether you will need extra academic support after you have been admitted to university.
Some use them to help develop curricula within their university.
