ABOUT THE BURSARY PROVIDER – DSI & CSIR
The Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) and the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) are two prominent organizations in South Africa.
The CSIR, established in 1945, is Africa’s largest research and development organization and plays a crucial role in scientific and industrial advancement. It covers a significant portion of the African R&D budget, approximately 10%.
The DSI is committed to promoting research and innovation for socio-economic development in South Africa. Their goal is to achieve groundbreaking scientific advancements and ensure the well-being of all South Africans through various programs and collaborations with entities.
ABOUT THE DSI-CSIR BURSARY PROGRAMME – FIELDS COVERED
The DSI and CSIR are offering the DSI-CSIR Inter-Bursary Support (IBS) program for the 2024 academic year. This program provides bursaries for postgraduate studies in various thematic research focus areas. The fields covered include Bio-catalysis, Biopharming, Bioprocessing, Health, ICT, Indigenous Knowledge Systems (IKS), Microsystems Technology, Mining, Modelling and Digital Sciences, Titanium (Manufacturing Elements), and Photonics.
The Inter-Bursary Support (IBS) program aims to support capacity development in key areas identified by the DSI. The CSIR supports this initiative to promote skill development in these areas.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DSI-CSIR BURSARY
To be eligible for the DSI-CSIR Bursary, applicants must meet the following minimum criteria:
- South African citizenship or permanent residency
- Enrolled or intending to enroll full-time in postgraduate studies in one of the specified thematic research focus areas for the 2024 academic year
- Studying or registered at a public university in South Africa
- Not employed on a full-time basis
- Honours applicants: Not older than 28 years old, with a minimum average of 65% for all major subjects in the final year of undergraduate study
- Masters applicants: Not older than 30 years old, with a minimum average of 65% for all major subjects in Honours or the final year of a 4-year degree
- Doctoral applicants: Not older than 32 years old, with a minimum average of 65% at Masters level
- Masters and Doctoral applicants: Supervisor endorsement and motivation required
- Preference given to students with disabilities and those from previously disadvantaged backgrounds
HOW TO APPLY FOR THE DSI-CSIR BURSARY
Applications must be submitted online through the DSI-CSIR Bursary Application for 2024. When applying, indicate that you heard about the bursary from “https://uni24.co.za/.”
Ensure that clear copies of the following supporting documents are included with your online application:
- ID document (certified copy) for South African citizens
- Passport and proof of permanent residency (certified copies) for international students
- University degree certificate (certified copy)
- Full university transcript/record on institution letterhead
- Proof of university application or registration on institution letterhead
- Recommendation letter from your supervisor (Master’s or Doctoral applicants)
- Admission letter showing full-time registration (if available, to be submitted by successful applicants)
CLOSING DATE FOR THE DSI-CSIR BURSARY
The closing date for the DSI-CSIR Bursary is 30 August at 12:00. Applications submitted after this date will not be accepted, so it is important to apply before the closing date.
