Doug Banks Renewable Energy Vision (DBREV) Scholarship

ABOUT THE SCHOLARSHIP PROVIDER – DBREV

The Doug Banks Renewable Energy Vision (DBREV) is an independent trust established to honor the legacy of Dr Doug Banks, a visionary advocate for renewable energy and improving the lives of people in communities lacking basic amenities. DBREV awards scholarships to postgraduate students in the field of Renewable Energy, Energy Poverty, and Energy Access. The trust aims to carry on Dr Doug Banks’ vision and passion for providing renewable energy solutions to make a meaningful impact on people’s lives.

ABOUT THE DBREV SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME – FIELDS OF STUDY

DBREV is currently accepting applications from postgraduate students for its scholarship award for the 2022 academic year. The scholarship is specifically available for those pursuing a Master’s degree in Renewable and Sustainable Energy studies.

The scholarship provides financial support and mentorship for a period of two years, enabling recipients to contribute to changing the energy future of Africa. The scholarship is made possible through the sponsorship of Sanedi and Record (Renewable Energy Center of Research & Development). Funding for the second year of study is contingent upon satisfactory academic performance.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DBREV SCHOLARSHIP

To be considered for the DBREV Scholarship, applicants must meet the following minimum eligibility criteria:

  • South African citizenship or permanent residency
  • Enrolled in or intending to pursue a Master’s degree in Renewable and Sustainable Energy studies
  • Studying at a recognized university in South Africa
  • Background in fields such as Development Studies, Economics, Engineering, Environment & Geographical Science, Finance, or Science
  • Passion for making a positive difference in the lives of people in Africa
  • Commitment to addressing Energy Poverty and Energy Access through Renewable Energy systems
  • Dedication to achieving Sustainable Development Goals and addressing the challenges of Climate Change

HOW TO APPLY FOR THE DBREV SCHOLARSHIP

To apply for the DBREV Scholarship, applicants must complete the online application form available on the DBREV website. The following supporting documents must be uploaded with the application:

  • Certified copy of ID document
  • High school results
  • List of awards or prizes received in high school
  • Undergraduate/Postgraduate results (most recent or final results)
  • List of awards, prizes, bursaries, or scholarships received during tertiary studies
  • Motivation explaining the interest in Renewable Energy and the pursuit of postgraduate studies in Renewable Energy within a rural African context (maximum 400 words)
  • Proof of registration at a South African university for postgraduate studies in 2022 (if available)
  • Motivation describing the goals and aspirations in the Renewable Energy field, focusing on personal interests and strengths (maximum 300 words)
  • Additional details strengthening the scholarship application (maximum 200 words)
  • Details of the intended focus area of renewable energy during postgraduate studies (maximum 200 words)
  • Brief description of a research project and any relevant results (maximum 200 words)
  • Curriculum Vitae (if available)
  • Two or three letters of reference from individuals who know the applicant personally and academically (letters can be uploaded with the online application or emailed to info@dougbanks.co.za)

APPLICATION NOTES FOR THE DBREV SCHOLARSHIP

  • Applicants should save their motivational letters in a Word document and then copy and paste the responses into the application form.
  • Motivational letters should be written in the applicant’s own words and should not be plagiarized or copied without proper citation.
