About The University Of Pretoria
The University of Pretoria (UP) stands as the largest traditional university in South Africa and ranks among the top institutions in Africa. Established on March 4, 1908, the university is situated in Pretoria, which serves as both the administrative and de facto capital of South Africa. Initially established as the Pretoria campus of the Transvaal University College based in Johannesburg, it later achieved university status, becoming the fourth South African institution to do so, and has since operated continuously.
Since its inception, UP has witnessed substantial growth, evolving from a mere 32 students in a single late Victorian house to encompass over 53,000 students in 2019. The university boasts seven suburban campuses spread across 1,190 hectares (2,900 acres), offering a diverse range of undergraduate and graduate degree programs through its multi-campus public research institution.
