About FoodBev SETA

FoodBev SETA, or Food and Beverages Manufacturing Sector Education and Training Authority, is one of the 21 SETAs operating in South Africa. SETAs were established as per the Skills Development Act of 1998 to monitor the quality of education and training within specific sectors. FoodBev SETA focuses on the food and beverages manufacturing sector and is divided into five chambers, each related to a specific area of the industry:

  1. Baking, Cereals, Confectionery & Snacks (BCCS)
  2. Beverage Manufacturing
  3. Dairy Manufacturing
  4. Manufacture of Food Preparation Products
  5. Processed and Preserved Meat, Fish, Fruit, and Vegetables

The primary goal of FoodBev SETA is to improve the accessibility and quality of education and training in the sector by collaborating with training centers and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions in South Africa.

FoodBev SETA Bursary 2025-2026

FoodBev SETA offers bursaries to unemployed youth to develop critical and scarce skills needed in the food and beverages manufacturing sector. The bursaries aim to create a talent pool of professionals who can contribute to the growth of the sector.

For the academic year 2025-2026, FoodBev SETA is awarding bursaries to Doctorate (PhD) or Master’s degree students pursuing studies related to Food and Beverage Manufacturing and its value chain.

The bursary covers the following:

  • For Masters students: Maximum funding of R 120,000 per annum, covering registration fees, research costs, and study materials.
  • For PhD students: Maximum funding of R 150,000 per annum, covering tuition fees and research costs.

The exact amount of funding will depend on the evaluation, and it will be provided for the entire duration of the study.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria for the FoodBev SETA Bursary:

  • South African citizenship, permanent residency, or naturalized citizenship.
  • Pursuing a PhD or Masters qualification.
  • Studying at a recognized public university in South Africa.
  • For Masters students, research topics must be endorsed by supervisors and related to the F&B manufacturing value chain.
  • For PhD students, research proposals must be approved by the university, with an expected completion time frame of 2 to 5 years.
  • Not receiving funding from other bursaries or scholarship programs.

Preference is given to students from previously disadvantaged backgrounds.

How To Apply

To apply for the FoodBev SETA Bursary, follow these steps:

  1. Obtain the application form by emailing ‘ResearchBursaries@Foodbev.co.za.’
  2. Complete the application form with accurate details.

Documents Required

Prepare the following documents:

  • Certified copy of ID document (not older than three months).
  • Proof of registration at the university.
  • University’s Tax Clearance Certificate.
  • Approved research proposal from the tertiary institution (for PhD students).
  • Endorsed research proposal from the supervisor (for Masters students).
  • Declaration of intent and progress report, signed by the student and supervisor.

Submit the application form and documents to your University Bursary Office.

The application deadline for the FoodBev SETA Bursary is 17 February 2025-2026 at 16:30 local time.
