Government Bursaries in South Africa 2025-2026
South Africa offers a range of government bursaries across various departments and provinces. These bursaries are aimed at assisting students who meet specific criteria and are in financial need. Below is a detailed list of available bursaries, their requirements, and application details.
General Eligibility Criteria
- Must be a South African citizen
- Currently in Matric with good academic results or have completed Matric with good academic results
- Studying or accepted to study in fields usually related to skill shortages
- Some bursaries may require residency in specific areas

Eastern Cape Government Bursaries
- Alfred Nzo District Municipality Bursary
- Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality Bursary

Department of Higher Education and Training
The Department maintains a list of government bursaries available to deserving students.
It also has a website with international scholarship opportunities available to South Africans.
National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS)
NFSAS provides funding for deserving students who cannot afford further education. From 2018 this will be in the form of a bursary rather than a loan as was the case previously. Courses at public technical and vocational education and training.(TVET) colleges are also funded by NFSAS.
