In South Africa, passport applications cost R400.00 and can be done by appointment only at the passport offices in Pretoria and Cape Town (for a full list of offices, see http://www.home-affairs.gov.za/index_en/services/passports).
A child under 16 years of age who requires a passport should apply with his or her parent(s) or guardian(s). The parent(s) or guardian(s) must accompany their child to sign the application form and provide one recent photograph for each applicant, as well as proof of identity documents for themselves if applicable.
R400.00 – First application for a tourist passport
You must be 16 years old or older to apply for a passport in South Africa. To qualify, you need to be a South African citizen and have a valid ID document. You will also need to provide proof of your address and identity.
You can complete the application process at any South African post office. If you have applied for previous passports, bring these documents with you as well (the same goes if they were lost).

The fee is payable by depositing the required amount in any bank and presenting the proof of payment at a South African Consulate or Embassy abroad before submitting your passport application form.
R350.00 – First application for diplomatic/official passport
The government issues a diplomatic passport to South African diplomats, consular officials and their family members. It entitles the holder to the same privileges as a diplomat (such as immunity from prosecution and freedom of movement).

The Department of International Relations & Cooperation (DIRCO issues an official passport) on behalf of the President of the Republic. They usually issue official passports where there is no alternative mode of travel such as air or sea transport because it affords the bearer special privileges such as immunity from prosecution and freedom from police harassment while conducting official duties abroad. In addition, they also allow the bearer to enter countries without having to get visas beforehand.

R350.00 – First application for diplomatic/official passport
- If you are a citizen of South Africa, and you are 16 years old or older, then you can apply for a diplomatic passport.
- A diplomatic passport is good for all kinds of travel within the country, as well as outside it. Use your diplomatic passport to enter any country that does not require visas from South Africans (for example Japan). These countries include Ethiopia and Kenya.
Your first application for a passport in South Africa will cost you R400.
If you are 16 years or older, your first application for a passport will cost you R400. If you are under 16 years old, the fee is also R400.
For all other applications (such as renewals, replacements and amendments), the fee is R350 per application.
