Applications are currently available for farmers interested in acquiring one of the 896 underused or abandoned state properties being released for agricultural use. The farms are about 700,000 hectares in size and are accessible in all provinces save the Western Cape and Gauteng.
According to Thoko Didiza, minister of agriculture, land reform, and rural development, these farms are being distributed as part of the government’s land reform policy.
All selected candidates will get a 30-year leasehold with the option to purchase. According to Didiza, this type of leasehold imposes specific duties on the state as the landlord, while the beneficiaries are responsible for managing, maintaining, and growing the asset that they get from the government.
