Commonly grown in the Limpopo province of South Africa. “Peppadew” is the brand name of piquanté peppers, that have been pickled and sweetened. As the story goes, a farmer discovered the tiny pepper in South Africa in the 1990s and put it on the market. He described it as “peppery” but “sweet as the dew,” hence the name.

They can get to almost 1 inch in diameter and resemble a small cherry tomato. The plants grow very fast and can get over 5 feet tall and are very productive. Like many Capsicum baccatum varieties it takes a long season for fruit to ripen red.

The Steps to grow peppers

  • Ensure to choose a sunny spot in your garden and measure a 1m wide and 50cm long seedbed.
  • Dig 30cm deep to loosen the soil and mix one bucket of fertiliser into the soil.
  • Now make furrows 10cm apart and 2cm deep, and evenly sow your pepper seeds in the furrows and cover them with soil.
