KwaZulu-Natal Film Commission (KZNFC) Bursary 2025-2026

About KwaZulu-Natal Film Commission (KZNFC):

The KwaZulu-Natal Film Commission (KZNFC) was established in 2010 through a provincial act. Its primary mission is to transform South Africa into a center for film production and entertainment. The organization envisions creating a competitive, sustainable, and globally recognized film industry in South Africa. KZNFC partners with various entities, including government departments, trade and investment organizations, tourism authorities, and more.

KZNFC Bursary Program:

The KZNFC bursary program was initiated in 2014 to address the shortage of skilled and talented individuals in the South African film industry. It aims to support students interested in pursuing careers within the film industry, particularly in the fields of animation and TV/film studies. Notably, this bursary program does not cover acting qualifications.

Coverage:

The KZNFC bursary provides financial support for students, covering the following expenses:

  1. Full tuition fees for public universities.
  2. A prescribed books allowance.
  3. A monthly allowance.
  4. Accommodation for students living more than 50 kilometers from their school.

The bursary is designed to cover the expenses for one academic year at a time. To continue receiving funding for subsequent years, students are required to reapply.

Eligibility Criteria:

To qualify for the KZNFC bursary, students must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • South African citizenship.
  • Currently in Matric (Grade 12) or have completed Matric.
  • Reside within the KwaZulu-Natal province.
  • Strong academic record.
  • Enrolled or registered at a recognized tertiary institution in KwaZulu-Natal.
  • Intention to pursue studies in TV/film and animation-related fields at a minimum NQF level 6.
  • Preference may be given to students with disabilities and those from previously disadvantaged backgrounds.
  • Aspiring to pursue a career in the TV production/film or animation field.

How to Apply:

Interested students can request application forms by emailing bursary@kznfilm.co.za. Along with the application form, applicants must submit copies of the following documents:

  1. Certified ID document.
  2. June Matric results (certified) for Matric students.
  3. Matric certificate for those who have already passed Matric.
  4. Acceptance letter from a KwaZulu-Natal tertiary institution.
  5. Latest academic record for current Matric students.
  6. Proof of disability (if applicable).
  7. Proof of parents/guardians’ income (not older than 3 months).
  8. Maintenance order/affidavit (if parents are separated/divorced).
  9. Motivational letter explaining why the student deserves the bursary and why they have chosen the field of study, along with details of awards and achievements.

  • Incomplete applications or missing documents will result in disqualification.
  • Applicants should email their application form and documents to bursary@kwazulunatalfilm.co.za with the subject line “KZN Film Commission Bursary – Student’s Full Name.”

Closing Date:

The application deadline for the KZNFC bursary is 15 October .
